Staffordshire - Figurine - Haardspaniëls - Ceramic

These are a pair of hand-painted Staffordshire dog figurines. Originally popular in the 19th century, these ceramic spaniels were often placed as decorative items on mantelpieces.
They were also known as "haardspaniëls" or "comforters".

The figurines were mainly made by potters in the Staffordshire region of England.
Early, intact, matching pairs are rare nowadays and valuable to collectors.

The antique versions are usually press-cast with a small vent hole in the base, while later versions are often slip-cast with a larger hole.

There is a bit of color difference between the puppies; probably one stood a little closer to the fireplace than the other. This is visible in the photos.
