Berlin, Paul Cassirer, 1922, in-plate, half-beige linen, illustrated front board (binding stained, corners lightly worn, inner hinges reinforced, pale reddish spots scattered). Original edition issued in 180 numbered copies on handmade paper, signed by Grossmann, comprising 55 lithographs hand-coloured with, in the lower part, Grossmann's text recounting the story of Unold von Kaltenquell, some with an erotic undertone. Rudolf Grossmann (Fribourg, 1882-1941) was a German painter and illustrator. After studying in Munich and Paris, he travelled with Jules Pascin in Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1910 he settled in Berlin. He illustrated numerous works and taught art. In 1934, after the Nazis came to power, he was dismissed and returned to Fribourg. His art was declared degenerates, and 206 of his works were confiscated. In 1937, three pieces were exhibited in the Degenerate Art exhibition organized by the Nazis. Rare.
