Description from the seller

Ott, Christoph. Glorious Rome, or The Glorious Rome in its Two Hundred and Forty-two Popes. That is / Roman Popes / from St. Peter to our most Holy Father Clement the Tenth, who currently reigns gloriously ... Innsbruck, Reisacher, 1676.

Gothic 4°, 31.8 x 21.7 cm. With 1 engraved title, 1 frontispiece, and several woodcut tailpieces in the text. 4 pages, 668 pages, 28 pages of index and errata. Blind-embossed pigskin leather binding of the period on wooden covers over 5 bands with handwritten spine title. Roll band ornamentation and iron tool decorations, with two clasps.

First edition. ADB XXIV, 551; VD 17 23:233299X. The Jesuit and preacher Christoph Ott (1612 - 1684) was active at the order's schools and also engaged with historical topics. An interesting edition featuring biographies of the individual popes from Peter to Clement X. The beautiful frontispiece depicts Christ at the gate of the Garden of Paradise, accompanied by angels warding off the beasts of tyranny, heresy, godlessness, and schism; in the two trees at the edges are portraits of the popes in small medallions. Condition: Ex libris on the inside cover. The text block is slightly loosened. Stamp on engraved title and handwritten note on the title. Slight browning inside, little foxing, and the last pages are ragged around the edges, but overall a very clean copy. Engraved title and a few pages with defects. The binding is somewhat dusty, bumped, and stained; with defects at the corners and edges. An interesting presentation.
