"La Soglia del Volto" by Agatino Bivona (Bivaga), 2025, oil painting, original, Baroque, 54 cm high by 69.5 cm wide, Italy, hand signed, excellent condition, 2 kg, portrait, direct from the artist.
Description from the seller
La Soglia del Volto explores the fragile boundary between what is shown and what is withheld. The young woman faces the viewer directly, her gaze calm yet unreadable, while her hands gently rest upon a theatrical mask — an object that echoes her own expression without fully mirroring it.
Rendered in soft chiaroscuro, the painting relies on subtle transitions of light across fabric, skin, and porcelain surface. The white garments absorb and reflect light simultaneously, reinforcing the sense of liminality that defines the composition. The mask, delicately held rather than worn, becomes a quiet emblem of choice rather than concealment.
This is not a portrait of duality, but of threshold. The figure does not hide behind the mask, nor does she reject it. Instead, she remains suspended at the moment before transformation — a stillness that suggests awareness, agency, and inner composure.

About the artist:
Agatino Bivona, known artistically as Bivaga, was born in Biancavilla, Sicily, in 1972 and currently lives and works in Adrano. A pupil and close confidant of master Antonio Sciacca, Bivaga began his artistic journey at a young age and has spent over three decades refining his unmistakable visual language. His hyperrealistic portraits, rich in symbolism and emotional nuance, have been featured in major exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Celebrated in critical publications such as I Grandi Maestri (2009), and reviewed by prominent art critics like Nicola Villari and Alfredo Pasolino, Bivaga’s works are held in private collections across Europe, the United States, and Japan — carrying fragments of Sicilian elegance far beyond its borders.
