Orazio Lombardelli, L’Eleganze Toscane, 1587, in Italian and original language, 120 pages, 16 cm by 11 cm, bound in half-leather with gilt title, published by Giorgio Marescotti in a different edition, condition discrete.
Description from the seller
Rare sixteenth-century volume by Orazio Lombardelli, titled L’Eleganze Toscane, e Latine, a fundamental work for the study of language and style between the Renaissance and the early modern period.
The text was created as a linguistic and rhetorical tool, with the aim of fostering dialogue between the Tuscan language and classical Latin, offering examples, comparisons, and 'elegances' useful for both vernacular and Latin writing. The work fully fits into the broader humanistic debate on the dignity of the vernacular and its relationship with Latin, and it is particularly significant for the history of philology, grammar, and literary education between the 16th and 17th centuries.
The volume features sections in Latin and in the Vulgar, lexical tables, and reference indexes useful for consultation, as shown by the index and the internal structure of the work.
Edition
Florence, by Giorgio Marescotti, 1587, as indicated on the title page.
Edition revised by the author, with plates enriched ('Revised by himself, and with two enriched plates, one in the vernacular and the other in Latin').
Material description
Volume in 19th-century binding in half leather, with a decorated spine featuring fillets and a gilt title ('ELEGANZE'). The binding is solid but visibly aged, with abrasions, widespread wear, discolorations, and signs of old handling.
The cards appear complete and the text is entirely legible. The card shows natural browning, humidity stains, halos, and old dirt, consistent with the age of the volume. There are tears, small marginal gaps, and thinning, especially at the edges and corners, without compromising the text.
A more pronounced stain on the title page, clearly visible but not intrusive to readability. Margins are sometimes short or irregular. Normal paper waviness. Absence of modern invasive restorations.
Condition
Sample in fair condition, authentic, complete, and structurally stable. The conditions reflect real use and a long history of consultation. Volume suitable for collectors of antique books, scholars of Italian language, humanities, and Renaissance philology.
