Description from the seller
Now available at auction from Second Vintage
This is a historically significant timepiece from Japan's most renowned watchmaker. The Seiko Marvel was the watch that truly put Seiko on the map, representing a leap forward in precision and manufacturing quality for the brand as their first fully in-house designed movement. This specific example features a stunningly preserved dial with the desirable early "S" logo, making it a true collector's gem.
Brand: Seiko
Model: Marvel
Reference Number: H0514701
Serial Number: 10405291
Movement: Manual Wind Seikosha 19 Jewels
Dial: Silver Sunburst
Case Size: 35 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Gold Plated (20 Microns) / Stainless Steel Back
Production Year: c. 1950s
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with a very well preserved dial.
Dial and Hands
The silver sunburst dial is in exceptional condition for its age, retaining a bright and clean finish. It features applied gold-tone faceted hour markers and the collectible applied "S" logo below 12 o'clock, a signature of early Seiko luxury. The "Seiko Marvel" script and "Diashock 19 jewels" text are crisp and legible. The gold-tone dauphine hands are sharp, showing only very minor oxidation consistent with vintage authenticity.
Case and Crystal
The 35mm case is finished in 20-micron Capped Gold Plate (C.G.P.), a thicker and more durable application than standard plating, indicated by the stamping on the caseback. The case shows honest vintage wear with some softening of the edges and surface marks, but retains its classic form. The stainless steel snap-back caseback clearly displays all engravings, reference numbers, and the "Star" case manufacturer mark. The acrylic crystal is clear and presents well.
Movement
Powering the watch is the legendary Seikosha manual wind movement with 19 jewels. This caliber is famous for being the "marvel" of engineering that allowed Seiko to compete with Swiss accuracy standards in the 1950s. The movement is clean and features the classic copper-colored finish. Timegrapher results indicate the movement is running between +30 and +35 seconds per day, which indicates reliable vintage performance for a watch of this era.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a reddish-brown leather strap featuring geometric stitching, which complements the gold tones of the case and adds a stylish vintage character to the piece.
Condition
This timepiece is in excellent vintage condition. The highlight is undoubtedly the dial, which has survived the decades in remarkable shape. While the case shows expected signs of age and wear, the overall presentation is highly attractive and ready for the wrist of a collector.
Dimensions
Case diameter: 35 mm
Lug to lug: 41 mm (approximate visual estimate)
Lug width: 18 mm
Remarks
The Seiko Marvel is one of the most important watches in Japanese horological history. Finding one with a dial in this state of preservation, particularly with the applied "S" logo, is becoming increasingly difficult. It is a dress watch that combines historical significance with timeless elegance.
History
Introduced in 1956, the Seiko Marvel was the first Seiko movement designed entirely from scratch, breaking away from the influence of Swiss movements that had previously guided Japanese watchmaking. It was the watch that proved Seiko could produce world-class chronometers, eventually leading to the creation of Grand Seiko. This model represents the dawn of Seiko's golden age.
