Brand: Rado
Model: Alpineum
Reference Number: 11018
Movement: Automatic, 25 Jewels
Dial: Textured silver with horizontal brushing
Case Size: 36 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Stainless steel
Production Year: c. 1970s
Condition: Good vintage condition. The watch shows honest signs of wear to the case consistent with age, while the dial remains in excellent, clean condition.
Dial and Hands
The dial is the standout feature of this timepiece, presenting a silver tone with a deep horizontal brushed texture that creates a dynamic interplay with light. It features blocky applied silver indices that add depth to the face. At the 12 o'clock position sits the signature Rado anchor logo, which rotates freely, a hallmark of the brand's automatic models. A date window with red numerals is positioned at 3 o'clock, adding a pop of color to the monochromatic scheme. The baton-style hands are silver, containing lume plots that have aged to a dark tone, matching the vintage aesthetic.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features a cushion-style silhouette typical of the 1970s, combining polished and brushed surfaces. The case exhibits visible surface scratches and marks throughout, particularly on the bezel and lugs, consistent with a life of use. The crown is original and signed with the Rado anchor symbol. The screw-down caseback prominently displays the famous Rado "Water Sealed" logo featuring three seahorses, along with the reference number 11018. The acrylic crystal is generally clear, allowing for excellent visibility of the textured dial.
Movement
Powering the watch is a Swiss-made automatic movement, identified as an ETA 2824, featuring 25 jewels. The rotor is signed by Rado. The movement appears clean and is running within vintage tolerances, offering reliable vintage performance for daily wear.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a black leather strap with black stitching. The strap is in very good condition and complements the steel case and silver dial perfectly, giving the watch a classic and ready-to-wear appearance.
Condition
This timepiece is in good vintage condition. The case shows evident wear with scratches and small nicks typical of a watch from this period, preserving its honest history without over-polishing. The dial is exceptionally well-preserved, free from spotting or significant damage, which contrasts nicely with the lived-in feel of the case.
Dimensions
The case measures 36 mm in diameter excluding the crown, offering a classic fit that sits comfortably on a variety of wrist sizes. The lug design allows the watch to wear slightly larger than its dimensions might suggest, providing a substantial presence.
Remarks
The Rado Alpineum is a less frequently seen model compared to the omnipresent Voyager or Green Horse lines, making it a desirable find for Rado enthusiasts. The textured dial gives it a unique visual appeal that elevates it beyond a standard steel sports watch.
History
Rado has long been a pioneer in materials and design, establishing itself in the mid-20th century as a brand willing to push boundaries. The Alpineum line hails from a period when Rado was heavily focused on water resistance and durability, indicated by the "Water Sealed" branding on the caseback. This era produced some of the most durable and stylish daily wearers of the 1970s.
