This work belongs to the realm of poetic abstraction, where colour and interior architecture become an emotional language. The overall atmosphere is one of contemplative stillness: there are no human or organic figures; everything appears inhabited by a profound absence… although an ancient echo of humanity’s passing can still be sensed.

The painting constructs an oneiric architectural landscape through large planes of colour. In the foreground, a curved vertical structure in ochre and reddish tones dominates the composition on the right-hand side. Around it, geometric surfaces in yellows, oranges, greys and greens create depth and perspective, as if we were facing a silent city or a mental territory suspended in time. The great walls suggest cliffs on the verge of releasing echoes, as though the landscape still holds the vibrating memory of what is no longer there.

An essential element in my work, the stairways are delicately incised into the colour with a blade, like subtle traces that evoke ascent, passage and memory.

Between what is visible and what is only implied, the work breathes between poetic surrealism, geometric abstraction and inner landscape, inviting the viewer to inhabit colour as a contemplative experience.

About the artist

Maurizio Valch is a visual artist, writer and graphic designer trained in Graphic Design and Fine Arts. He lived in Miami (USA) until 2013, where he ran his own studio, and later in Barcelona (Spain), where he took part in exhibitions at the Real Círculo Artístico. In 2017 he presented a work at the Gran Teatre del Liceu and has also collaborated with MACBA.

His painting practice —developed full-time— explores a form of “poetic surrealism”, where recurring symbols such as portals, ladders, night skies and silent architectural forms often appear. Many of his works are accompanied by original poems.
