AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

DESCRIPTION: I present to you at auction a beautiful set of 3 volumes containing the famous 'Les Contes des Génies' ('Les Contes des Génies or the Charming Lessons of Horam, son of Asmar, a work translated from Persian into English by Sir Charles Morell, former ambassador of the English establishments in India, at the court of the Great Mogul; and in French from the English translation. With XIII illustrations.')

The work is a collection of delightful oriental stories inspired by One Thousand and One Nights and Arab and Persian traditions.

The work includes stories of Genies (djinns in Arabic), magic, kings and princesses, and moral tests, and is illustrated with 14 magnificent engravings, some of which have erotic undertones. (One frontispiece + 13 on the inner pages).

The stories were originally published in 1764 by the English writer James Kenneth Ridley (1736-1765) under the pseudonym 'Sir Charles Morell'. They immediately became very popular and went through numerous editions until the second quarter of the 19th century. They were translated into French and German.
