France, model: Mid to late X1Xth Century Richelieu decorative piece, cream colour, dimensions 1.36 m by 1.43 m, materials cotton and linen, period 1850–1900, in excellent condition and fully restored by a textile expert.
Description from the seller
This is a magnificent and rare Richelieu piece dating back to between
mid and end of the 19th Century.
It is in perfect condition.
The Cherub or Angel is an angelic figure found in the Jewish and Christian
religions. Their original form is a " creature of holiness" with a physique
that blends the lion, the bull and the man.
The garland is a sign of love and affection.
The garlands are made of fresh flowers, which are associated with beauty,
fragrance and purity. By exchanging these garlands, the bride and groom
express their love, affection, and admiration for each other.
The hand held torch by the cherub at he right top has long been the symbol
of freedom and liberty. In particular, it has been used to represent
civil rights and human right by the Nobel Peace Price, etc in todays time.
A torch could also represent being a light in the darkness to lead people, etc.
The Richelieu piece above thus represent purity, grace and the innocence of
the divine.
Their presence is often used to evoke a sense of serenity and celestial harmony.
I do not wish to add any other comment to this rare piece other than
it having been fully restored by a professional textile expert as it arrived
in a poor state and took him 2 days.
The damaged fillet and missing tassels have been lovingly taken care off.
Please see the damage at the end of the photos.
The piece would make a beautiful addition by sewing small brass rings
on the piece and supporting from a fine brass rail.
We have taken many photos for your perusal.
