Description from the seller
Die Darwin’sche Theorie.
Elf Vorlesungen über die Entstehung der Thiere und Pflanzen durch Naturzüchtung
By Dr. Georg Seidlitz, Privatdozent of Zoology at the Imperial University of Dorpat.
Dorpat (Tartu): C. Mattiesen, 1871.
Early German-language work explaining Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution in eleven structured lectures.
Seidlitz discusses core evolutionary ideas such as variation, adaptation, natural selection, and the struggle for existence. He explains how new species arise under environmental pressure. The book also reflects on the scientific and philosophical questions raised by Darwinism and refers to debates of the period.
The volume includes an extensive contemporary bibliography on Darwinism. It lists both supportive and critical writings. This makes the book a useful source on the early reception of evolutionary theory in Central and Eastern Europe.
Published in Dorpat, today Tartu in Estonia. At the time, the city belonged to the Russian Empire and was an important academic centre of the Baltic region.
With one fold-out diagram.
Good overall condition. Last ca. 40 pages with staining. Otherwise clean and complete.
