FIRST EDITION printed in 1634 on the history and origins of the Kingdom of Hungary, written by Martinus Schödel (circa 1600-1660), Matthias Bernegger (1582-1640) and Georg Wernher (c. 1490–1556). Schödel was one of the most important historians, writers of the Hungary Republic, this work is an updated synthesis of his previous work "Disquisitio historico-politica de regno Hungariae or historical-political investigation of the kingdom of Hungary" published in 1629, and here collected and edited by Elzevir brothers from Holland. This work is considered one of the best works of Hungarian humanistic historiography for its factual richness and accuracy, as well as its formal and stylistic perfection. The book narrates the events not only of present-day Hungary but also of the regions and states that were part of the kingdom over the years such as Croatia, Slovakia, Dalmatia, Austria, Wallachia, Romania, Transylvania, Moravia, Moldova, Serbia, Slovenia and the struggle for independence of the Hungarian people from the Turkish Empire. This work from 1634 and the previous work from 1629 were for a long time the fundamental source of information about the Hungarian state and the proof of its existence and origin. This book "Respublica et Status Regni Hungariae or Republic and State of the Kingdom of Hungary" was published by Elzevir in Leiden in 1634. The author Martinus Schödel or Márton Schödelius begins the history and analysis about 2000 years before the foundation of the Hungarian state with the presence and invasions of various populations including the Celts, Romans, Huns, Germanic peoples, Avars and Slavs. Hungarian statehood is traced to the Principality of Hungary, which was established in the late ninth century by the first grand prince Álmos (circa 850-895) and his son Árpád through the conquest of the Carpathian Basin. King Stephen I ascended the throne in 1000 and converted his realm to a Christian kingdom. The medieval Kingdom of Hungary was a European power, reaching its height in the Late Middle Ages. After a long period of Ottoman wars, Hungary’s forces were defeated at the Battle of Mohács in 1526 and its capital Buda was captured in 1541, opening a period of more than 150 years where the country was divided into three parts: Royal Hungary (loyal to the Habsburgs), Ottoman Hungary and the largely independent Principality of Transylvania.

The examination of the text reveals the exact origin with some variations from the previous book by Martinus Schödel "Disquisitio historico-politica de regno Hungariae" published in collaboration with Matthias Bernegger in Strasbourg in 1629. Schödel came from a noble bourgeois family from Bratislava (Slovakia), where his father was mayor, and studied for two years in Strasbourg (France) with Matthias Bernegger from 17 May 1627. He also lived with him and had access to the considerable library in his house. Schödel became a member of the humanist circle that gathered around Bernegger and corresponded with Martin Opitz (1597-1639), among others. From one of his letters from Paris we learn that it was the poet Robert Roberthin or Robertinus (1600-1648) who arranged for Schödel's book to be published by Elzevir in Leiden in 1634.
