Publisher: Bibliotheca Rara – Münster, 2008. 200 pages. Facsimile in leather binding with rich gold embossing and commentary volume in original full linen with gold-embossed titles. The facsimile is presented in a luxurious case, and the initials are executed with gold leaf. 28 x 23 cm.
Between 1536 and 1537, a lavish prayer book was created in Nuremberg and Halle for Albrecht of Brandenburg (1490–1545), one of the most powerful church princes of the Reformation. The 200-page parchment manuscript was produced through the collaboration of the illuminator Gabriel Glockendron (circa 1515–after 1585) and the scribe Georg Stierlein, and impresses with 42 full-page miniatures, magnificent border decorations, and 73 ornamental initials. Overall, five captivating depictions of the Passion invite the viewer to meditate on the suffering of Christ, presented in expressive scenes.
