Four-volume reissue of Recueil de pièces galantes, en prose et en vers de Madame la Comtesse de la Suze, et de Monsieur Pelisson, by Henriette de Coligny Comtesse de la Suze and Paul Pellisson-Fontanier, in French, original language, 345+307+277+356 pages with tables, published in 1725 in good condition with some wear and bindings in full morocco with gilt edges.
Description from the seller
New edition of this rare collection, containing love letters, stanzas, sonnets, epigrams, love notes, madrigals, odes, songs, and elegies by Henriette de Coligny, Countess of Suze (1618-1673), and Paul Pellisson-Fontanier (1624-1693).
Complete in four volumes preserved in charming full marbled calf bindings, with three gold-ruled borders framing the covers, spine decorated with small gold tools, filleted edges, and an inner roulette, all edges gilded.
Condition: Mors split across three volumes, those of volume II cracked. Five headbands shaved, corners pierced, and some scuffs. Covers, title pages, and tables slightly yellowed, with a few scattered foxing spots, quite rare and not serious.
Rich anthology of 17th-century courtly literature, the works of the Countess of Suze are highly sought after.
La Suze was at the center of a society dedicated to poetry and gallantry. Ninon de Lenclos, Christine de Suède, Madeleine de Scudéry were her friends. She wrote, amidst a life of dissipation and light morals, during which she gained a reputation for beauty, wit, and talent. It is believed she collaborated with several others, such as Segrais, Ménage, or Subligny. She was especially notable for her elegies, which earned her a prominent place in 17th-century poetry. Paul Pellisson moved within the circle of the Countess of La Suze and associated with the same people; secretary to Nicolas Fouquet and royal historiographer, he was connected with many literary figures of that era (Bussy-Rabutin, Madame de Sévigné, Mademoiselle de Scudéry...).
