AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Portrait of a Prelate – Oil on canvas, mid-19th century – French School – Important restoration by Marco Mignarri – Contemporary mahogany frame

Description
Elegant French portrait from the mid-19th century, executed in oil on canvas and depicting a prelate in dark robes, with the traditional rectangular white collar typical of the French clergy of the 19th century.

The work displays a very high pictorial quality: the face is rendered with an almost miniature finesse, with particular attention to tonal transitions, the luminosity of the eyes, and the rendering of the skin. The penetrating and composed expression gives the subject a strong visual presence, perfectly in keeping with French portraits of the period.

The lightly veiled, greenish background elegantly highlights the figure. The surface features an antique, uniform craquelure, typical of mid-nineteenth-century paintings.

The painting is accompanied by its magnificent original solid mahogany frame, contemporary, perfectly harmonized with the severe and refined style of the work, which has been the subject of a targeted conservative maintenance intervention, aimed at enhancing its original patina and ensuring its stability and solidity.”

Condition and restoration
Coming from a private collection, the painting underwent a complete and highly professional restoration in 2025 at the laboratory of restorer Marco Mignarri (signed technical report attached).

The intervention included:
• selective cleaning of the painted surface;
• protective veiling;
• consolidation of the paint film and preparatory layers;
• structural treatment of the canvas with perimeter strip-lining;
• fillings;
• tempera and watercolor reintegrations;
• final coating in stable aliphatic resin.

The painting today is in excellent condition, stable and perfectly legible.
