About the manufacturer:
Friedrich Goldscheider (* November 6, 1845, in Slabetz, Bohemia; January 19, 1897, in Nice) was an Austrian entrepreneur and manufacturer of terracotta and bronze.
Figures from the Vienna manufactory Friedrich Goldscheider were highly sought after internationally at the end of the 19th century and especially in the 1920s, appealing to a broad audience. Goldscheider is among the most successful companies in European ceramics history.
From the beginning, the 'Porcelain Manufacture and Majolica Factory' focused on serially produced, high-quality goods designed by young artists. A product range—including figures, busts, animals, masks, vessels, and lamps—met the diverse needs of customers. Over 70 years, more than 10,000 models made of faience, terracotta, bronze, and alabaster were produced. Figures and vessels of the highest artistic and technical standards were created in the period's typical styles of Historicism, Jugendstil, and Art Deco. In 1938, the company Goldscheider was Aryanized and led by Josef Schuster during the war years. He ensured that new models conformed to the prevailing NS aesthetics. Rural figures in rough forms expanded the offering, and the nude figures with modest expressions and moral hairstyles from this period remained fashionable into the 1950s.
The Goldscheider objects were created, among other collaborations, with artists Walter Bosse, Alexandre-Louis-Marie Charpentier, Demétre Chiparus, Stephan Dakon, Claire Weiss-Herczeg, Benno Geiger, Kurt Goebel, Rudolf Knörlein, Dina Kuhn, Josef Lorenzl, Ida Meisinger, Michael Powolny, Adolf Prischl, Hans Stephan Stoltenberg Lerche, Arthur Strasser, Wilhelm Thomasch, and Vally Wieselthier. Artists who worked for Goldscheider also worked for the Viennese manufactories Augarten, Keramos, or the German brands Rosenthal and Meissen porcelain.
