Description from the seller
Aerosol paint on canvas, 50x50cm and 60x60cm with a white frame. Sold with a white American box frame.
Crash, or John Matos, is a graffiti artist born in the Bronx on October 11, 1961. He is one of the major protagonists of the "Aerosol (R)evolution".
He started doing graffiti at a very young age on New York trains before practicing on canvases.
He joined the Sidney Janis gallery in 1983 before entering the world's largest collections, including the MoMA in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
He came to public attention by co-producing the Peter Stuyvesant advertising campaign with Keith Haring. He gained recognition in France by participating in the 5/5 Figuration Libre, France-USA exhibition at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1984. This exhibition juxtaposed the work of artists such as Basquiat, Boisrond, Combas, Keith Haring, Tseng Kwong Chi, Di Rosa… and John Matos Crash.
In a style reminiscent of comics, and always featuring the flamboyant colors typical of advertising, they assert themselves as a pure product of the contemporary world. They fit perfectly within the lineage of Pop Art and elevate this supposed subculture once again to the status of "high art".
