Description from the seller

A rare illustrated set that constitutes a major bibliophilic achievement of the 19th century, combining philological rigor, stylistic elegance and spiritual ambition, in a French version that profoundly marked the reception of the Scriptures in literary, devout and classical circles -

This translation, originally produced in the 17th century within the Port-Royal community, is distinguished by its clarity, its sobriety, and its concern to make the sacred text accessible to a cultivated but non-specialist public, while preserving the majesty of the biblical style.

Lemaistre de Sacy, in classical and harmonious French, presents the books of the Old and New Testaments with respectful fidelity to the Latin and Hebrew sources, while integrating the exegetical and moral commentaries specific to the Jansenist tradition.

The 1843 edition, carefully printed by Furne et Cie, is presented in four volumes adorned with magnificent engravings -

Lemaistre De Sacy - The Holy Bible - 1843 - Volume I, II, III and IV - Furne et Cie -
462 + 591 + 523 + 570 pages.

Good condition of the bindings, books in their original full black boards, some wear from use, wear on headcaps, corners and joints, gilt edges, smooth spines with decoration, gilt titles and volume numbers, covers decorated with a cross and blind-stamped fillets -

Good internal condition, some foxing, books enriched with numerous black and white engravings outside the text, including a frontispiece and geographical maps on folding plates, texts in two columns -

Delivery service guaranteed within a few days.
