Description from the seller
Paul Spencer
British Image No. 2 (Blur / Damon Albarn)
An iconic photograph by British photographer Paul Spencer, taken in London in 1993, featuring the band Blur with its singer Damon Albarn, at the pivotal moment in the emergence of the Britpop movement.
From the British Image Series 1 & 2, this image marks an aesthetic rupture between the sophisticated, polished codes of the 1980s and the tougher, urban, and self-aware attitude of the 1990s — a T-shirt, jeans and Doc Martens — helping to define for good the visual identity of Blur and of a British musical generation.
Large-format exhibition print on Dibond (aluminium), produced in 2011 for the exhibition In Your Face at Galería 14, Palma (Majorca).
Limited edition: 1/4, signed by the artist.
Dimensions: 85 × 85 cm
Technique: printing on Dibond aluminum
Year of filming: 1993
Year of printing: 2011
The artwork is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. (COA).
State
Good overall condition
The artwork shows signs of wear consistent with its age and history of exposure. Two light surface scratches are present, located in the lower part of the image, barely visible from the front and mainly perceptible under grazing light.
The edges and corners show slight signs of wear.
These elements do not affect either the readability or the visual impact of the photograph, as is evident in the overall view.
On the back are three wooden pieces that were used for hanging the exhibition, as well as remnants of industrial tape that held the parts intended to be fixed to the wall. These items are not included in this sale.
A rare, large-format work, art photography and historical document, emblematic of British music culture of the early 1990s.
About the artist
Paul Spencer is a British photographer trained in fine arts (Croydon College of Art, then Norwich School of Art), whose work sits at the crossroads of portraiture, reportage, and British countercultures.
Active since the 1980s, he photographs major figures on the international music scene, including The Clash, the Sex Pistols, Shane MacGowan, Bryan Ferry, Elvis Costello, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Radiohead, Morrissey of the Smiths, among others.
Its images British Image 1 & 2 devoted to Blur are today considered foundational to the Britpop aesthetic, marking the visual transition between the 1980s and 1990s.
In parallel with his artistic work, Paul Spencer has collaborated with numerous international brands and institutions, including Dr. Martens, Vodafone, EMI, Getty Images, Vivienne Westwood, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
His style, characterized by stark black-and-white imagery and a direct approach to his subjects, makes his work a powerful visual testimony to the contemporary British musical and cultural scenes.
