Description from the seller
Antique crucifix with a bronze Christ – exceptional collectible quality
Dimensions: 90 × 70 cm
Material: solid wood (cross) & heavy cast bronze (Christ, INRI plaque and memento mori)
Period: approx. late 19th century (1860–1890)
This monumental cross is an exceptionally collectible religious art piece of high quality. The Christ figure is crafted in heavy, solid (probably) cast bronze, which is immediately felt in its weight and visible in the depth of the modelling. The anatomy is powerful and realistically rendered, with refined muscle groups, a natural stance, and an expressive facial expression. This suggests that the Christ image (as well as the cross) must have been produced in the late 19th century (1860-1890).
Bronze has, through more than a century of natural aging, developed a beautiful matte sheen with a soft, noble patina that only occurs on authentic antique pieces. No aggressive cleaning: the surface breathes age, character, and authenticity.
The wooden cross is carefully carved with a rustic, almost bark-like texture. The decorative details – the INRI plaque, the crossed bones and skull (memento mori) at the bottom – reinforce the symbolic and spiritual character of this work. This type of cross was often crafted for chapels, monasteries, or stately interiors and rarely appears on the market in this quality and size.
A striking showpiece of substantial size, suitable for collectors of religious art, interior designers, or enthusiasts of rare devotional objects. Such pieces appear only rarely—seize this unique opportunity.
