La Speranza, oil on canvas in Baroque style by Alessandro Ossani (active 1857–1891), Italy, 19th century, depicting a religious theme, signed by hand and sold with its original frame, measuring 73 cm high by 61 cm wide.
Description from the seller
La Speranza.
Ancient painting depicting Hope.
This painting is a faithful replica of a probable original painting by Guido Reni that has not yet been traced and therefore cannot be attributed with certainty, sometimes identified with Mary Magdalene and also attributed to Carlo Dolci. It has been replicated several times, even by Ossani himself, indicating the critical success the authentic work had among painters of later generations.
Our oil on canvas painting, created in the first half of the nineteenth century, is undoubtedly executed by a master influenced by the work of ancient masters. It is signed on the back of the frame (original) Alessandro Ossani, active in Rome between 1856 and 1893.
The artist, about whom little biographical information is available, first appeared at the Roman Exhibition of Amateurs and Connoisseurs in 1856 (Portrait, Woman in the act of adornment). They participated in the Milan Exhibition of 1864 with an allegorical painting (Music) and at the Florence exhibitions of 1867 and 1872 with numerous portraits, which seem to attest to regular relationships with a qualified foreign clientele (1867, Madame Hopeneim née Fenzi, Baroness d’Hooghvorst née Marchesa Guadagni). In perfect condition, it still retains its original frame, canvas, and frame, measuring: 62 cm x 50 cm, and 61 cm x 73 cm with the frame.
