Condition: Beautiful illuminated plaque in the first plate despite border defects, slightly worn percaline with light discolorations along the edges of the plates. Small tears at the caps, corners compressed. Interior clean and fresh, virtually free of rust.
Memories of an Elephant
Published in 1894 by Judith Gautier, this is a wonderful tale recounting the life of a sacred white elephant from Siam (now Thailand) named Iravata, exploring themes such as friendship, love, jealousy, perseverance, and the Orient, with striking illustrations by Alphonse Mucha and Pierre Ruty. This text, reissued several times, celebrates the fantasized Orient and is part of Judith Gautier's forgotten yet important works.
Author and Context
Judith Gautier (1845-1917): French novelist of the late 19th century, she was known for her exotic stories and her induction into the Goncourt Academy.
1894: Date of the first publication of the story, often accompanied by illustrations.
Themes and Plot
The story follows Iravata, a royal white elephant, through his journey from Siam to India, blending elements of royal life, battles, escapes, and encounters.
The story addresses difference, friendship (with other animals and humans), love (for a princess), and life's challenges.
Illustrations
The original edition and reissues include illustrations by Alphonse Mucha, a renowned Art Nouveau artist, and Pierre Ruty (for the headers).
