Description from the seller
Cave I is a powerful contemporary painting by the Alicante-based artist Alfonso Sánchez, one of the most promising voices in current Spanish expressionism. In 2022, Sánchez was awarded the 1st Prize at the Sánchez Butrón National Painting Contest, in addition to receiving several honorable mentions in national and international competitions. His work is held in private collections across Spain, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, Germany, the United States, Japan, and Taiwan.
This work belongs to the artist’s Cavern series, inspired by the interior landscapes of caves—their shapes, textures, volumes, and the slow transformation caused by water, erosion, darkness, and light over millions of years. The painting evokes a primordial environment where matter, time, and memory coexist, inviting the viewer into a space that feels both ancient and emotionally charged.
Executed in a lyrical expressionist style, Cave I emphasizes materiality and texture, with visible layers of paint, dynamic brushwork, and intuitive gestures. Bold reds, warm ochres, greys, and blacks interact in a dense composition where forms emerge and dissolve, echoing the natural processes that shape subterranean worlds. The painting reflects Sánchez’s intuitive working method, where accident, gesture, and instinct play a central role.
The sides are painted in black, reinforcing the finished, immersive character of the piece, and the artwork is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Deeply influenced by prehistoric cave paintings, as well as by cinema and science fiction—such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dune, Interstellar, and Blade Runner—Alfonso Sánchez builds a visual language that connects past, present, and future, exploring themes of origin, evolution, and the passage of time.
Cave I is an intense, atmospheric work, ideal for collectors seeking contemporary expressionist painting with conceptual depth, strong material presence, and international relevance.
