India; architectural ornamental panel in carved sandstone with Moghul Empire motifs dating to circa 1650–1700, measuring 15 cm high by 13 cm wide and 9 cm deep, in good used condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
An architectural ornamental panel in carved sandstone, attributable to the artistic production of northern India in the Mughal era, likely datable to the eighteenth century. The relief presents a refined floral decoration with bulbs and corollas of stylized lotus flowers, carved in high relief and arranged according to a balanced symmetric composition, typical of late Mughal ornamental language. The lotus, an iconographic element of deep symbolic value in Indian culture, alludes to purity, regeneration, and cosmic harmony and is widely attested in the architectural claddings of palaces, pavilions, and monumental complexes of the period. The panel appears plausibly part of a broader decorative apparatus, as suggested by the proportions, the continuity of motifs, and the side and rear surfaces, which show traces of trimming attributable to a relatively modern intervention of separation. Such cutting marks, visible mainly on the back, do not call into question the authenticity and antiquity of the artifact, which remains an original fragment of historic architecture, but rather testify to a later phase of adaptation or recovery. The carved surface preserves good legibility of volumes and details, with a patina consistent with age and natural wear from exposure. Overall, the work represents a significant example of Mughal ornamental sculpture in sandstone, appreciable both for its execution quality and for its historical and decorative value.
