This atmospheric oil painting by Cor Noltee captures a quiet autumn day in a historic Dutch town. Warm, earthy tones and lively brushwork depict a tree-lined canal road with traditional brick houses and stepped gables, while a woman strolls beneath falling leaves. The composition and architecture strongly suggest a location in the Netherlands. Noltee’s loose, impressionistic handling lends the scene a sense of movement and seasonal light, making this a charming and evocative example of mid-20th-century Dutch townscape painting.
Born Bernardus Cornelis Noltee in The Hague in 1903, the artist became known as one of the last generation of Dutch impressionists with strong ties to the Haagse School. He studied at the Hague Academy of Fine Arts and later at the Académie Julian in Paris, and spent much of his career traveling and working across the Netherlands and beyond. Noltee’s oeuvre encompasses landscapes, cityscapes, river views, portraits, still lifes, and genre scenes, all painted in a robust, naturalistic manner influenced by both Dutch impressionism and the work of painters such as George Breitner—earning him the nickname “the Dordtse Breitner.” In later years his work evolved toward a more expressive palette and style, particularly after settling in Dordrecht in 1937, where he captured the spirit of the historic city and its environs.
