Méquignon, Paris, 1787.

Octavo (19.7 x 12.2 cm), xvi pages - 32 pages (pagination continuous), 430 pages, (1) leaf, bound. Full mottled brown calf, spine with raised bands ornamented, red morocco title-piece, gilt filet on the edges, red edges. Contemporary binding. Three corners epidermized (rubbed), head cap chipped, foot cap damaged, epidermis wear and wormholes on the upper cover, stains on the boards, significant damp staining along the edge of the leaves with weakening of the paper and an old trace of mold affecting also the plates.

Original edition of the French illustrated translation with seven folding plates drawn by William Bell and engraved by Dupin.

John Hunter (1728–1793), English surgeon, published in 1786 this treatise on venereal diseases. In it he discusses diseases such as gonorrhoea and syphilis, which he identified as arising from the same pathogenic agent, and develops a discourse on urological surgery. The latter, as early as 1780, coined the terms 'primary and secondary sexual characteristics' to designate the sexual differences.
