Description from the seller
Autumn Flowers by Marthe Danard Puig, 20th century – France
Impressive still life titled 'Fleurs d’automne' ('Autumn Flowers'), by the French artist Marthe Danard Puig. In the center, a slender, cylindrical vase filled with chrysanthemums, most of which are already withered. The background is dark, highlighting the luminosity and chromatic richness of the flowers.
It presents the characteristic style of its respective genre, realistic and detailed, which gradually gained prominence in the history of art. The great artist Caravaggio (1573-1610) was one of the first to depict still lifes with an awareness of pictorial craft, but many others used it at some point in their careers. With origins in antiquity and very popular in Western art since the 17th century, the still life allows the artist more compositional freedom than other pictorial genres such as landscape or portraiture. Before 1700, they often contained religious and allegorical symbolism related to the objects depicted. Also known as still lifes, they typically feature animals, flowers, fruits, foods, plants… Their development is part of the growing appreciation for painting and the explosion of interest in naturalism and imitation of nature that began to develop at the end of the previous century.
It rises like a sublime and beautiful work, exquisite and of great pictorial quality. It does not seek merely visual delight but invites the viewer to contemplate the passage of time, delving into the fleeting beauty of nature and vegetation through the 'arrival of autumn' and the flowers and petals scattered across the tablecloth. Chrysanthemums are the flowers that represent Japanese autumn, once again referencing the title of the work.
Marthe Danard Puig is a painter recognized for her floral still lifes. Her works stand out for their harmonious and delicate compositions, often in large formats and with a classical realism.
