Description from the seller
Michael Andersen & Søn – Marianne Starck – Iconic “Negro Series” rooster – model 5719 – ca. 1960
An exceptional and rare mid-century modern ceramic sculpture from Denmark, designed by Marianne Starck for the famous ceramic factory Michael Andersen & Søn on the island of Bornholm. This impressive rooster figure belongs to the iconic Negro series, one of the most progressive and collectible design lines in postwar Scandinavian ceramics.
The Negro series was developed in the late 1950s for the international art and design market and is characterized by a deep black matte stoneware base with a contrasting hand-applied white slip decoration. The graphic patterns, bold lines and sculptural volumes clearly show influences from the Cobra movement, Picasso’s ceramics and modernist abstract art.
This rooster model, no. 5719, is one of the most recognizable and beloved forms in this series. The expressive head, the monumental fan-tail, and the almost architectural body shape give the object an exceptionally strong visual presence.
The underside bears the well-known three-herring shield mark of Michael Andersen & Søn (Bornholm), the factory mark of this historic Danish earthenware producer.
Furthermore, the item is marked with the original model number 5719, under which this specific rooster form is precisely listed. This concerns the large display version, significantly rarer and more sought after than the smaller variants.
Marianne Starck (1938–2007) is regarded as one of the leading designers for Michael Andersen & Søn. Her work from the Negro series ranks among the most collected and museum-valued ceramics in Scandinavia.
