Description from the seller
“Split Presence”
70x100cm
Created by the artist E. Perez Lezcano
In this work I explore drawing as a primordial act, almost instinctive. The black line does not appear as a simple contour, but as a force that runs through the composition, that cuts, sustains, and tensions the color. It is a line that does not seek to beautify, but to speak. For me, the black stroke is a form of thought: direct, sincere, sometimes abrupt, but always necessary.
The fragmented face does not represent an external duality, but an interior divided presence, a coexistence of emotional states that do not cancel each other out. The drawing acts as an emotional structure: each line marks a decision, a boundary, a pause. There are no neutral lines; all carry intention, weight, and memory.
Textures arise from gesture and time. I let acrylic and pastel coexist, overlap, brush against one another. I’m interested in that space where color loses its purity and gains body, where the surface reveals the process. Visible brushstrokes, smudges, and unfinished areas are part of the artwork’s language: they speak of humanity, of imperfection, of what is in constant construction.
The drawing, in this sense, is not preparatory: it is definitive. It is direct expression. It is a form of presence. In Split Presence, color sustains the emotion, but it is the line that articulates the voice. A voice that does not shout, but neither hides.
This work arises from my interest in exploring how gesture, stroke, and matter can communicate internal states without the need for literal narration. It is a conscious search for a balance between control and freedom, between form and emotion, between what is shown and what remains contained.
