Hermès Paris silk carré “Étriers”, vintage 1974 edition, 90 × 90 cm, made in France, in good used condition with signs of wear and a hand-rolled edge.
Description from the seller
Hermès Paris – Silk square “Étriers” – Vintage edition 1974 – Françoise de la Perrière – 90 × 90 cm – Hand-rolled
General overview
This Hermès silk scarf “Étriers,” made of 100% silk, is an iconic work of the Hermès Paris house, designed by the renowned designer Françoise de la Perrière, a major figure in Hermès textile design in the 20th century.
The *Étriers* model was created and published for the first time in 1964.
The specimen presented here corresponds to a vintage edition dated 1974, identifiable by its color combination, its printing style, and its manufacturing characteristics typical of Hermès productions from the mid-1970s.
Historical context & iconography
The stirrup motif lies at the heart of Hermès' identity, directly drawn from its equestrian heritage.
The composition is dominated, at the center, by a monumental stirrup in the shape of a pyramid, inspired by a Peruvian model from the second half of the 19th century.
Under this central element lies the inscription 'Étriers – Hermès Paris'.
Even further down, a detail is revealed that is particularly sought after by collectors:
the slipper stirrup, nicknamed the Amazon sandal, historically used by women riding astride.
It is in this element that Françoise de la Perrière discreetly integrated her copyright, a subtle graphical signature that can be found in several of her creations.
Around this central scene are depicted different types of historical stirrups, illustrating the uses and equestrian techniques:
* pivoting brackets
* barred stirrups
* French stirrups, heavier and more comfortable
* Hungarian calipers, lighter, suited for fast and precise mounting
Together, it forms a genuine encyclopedic iconography of the art of horsemanship.
Colours & composition
* Dominant colors: green, mastic (light beige), black, brown
* Background: ivory
* Borders: deep green, accented with warm gold tones
* Material: 100% silk
* Finish: hand-rolled hem
* Signature of the drawing: F. de la Perrière
* Dimensions: approximately 90 × 90 cm
Dating
* Edition: 1974
* French production
* Vintage Hermès carré, no longer in production.
This dating ensures consistency in the documentation and precise identification for collectors.
State of conservation
Overall condition: good vintage condition, in keeping with the age of the piece.
Note:
* Two visible marks in the center, just beneath the inscription “Étriers Hermès Paris”.
* Some additional light marks, barely visible and with no impact during wear or folding
* These marks remain discreet once the square is worn or folded.
* The composition label is missing (common on older squares), but the quality of the silk and the hand-rolled hem confirm without ambiguity that it is Hermès.
Professional dry cleaning is possible, with the note that it is a natural silk square*
Of interest to collectors
This box brings together several of the sought-after criteria:
* iconic Hermès design
* historical equestrian theme
* creation signed by Françoise de la Perrière
* dated vintage edition (1974)
* artisanal production (silk, hand-rolled)
This is a **collector's piece**, but also a perfectly portable scarf, a testimony to Hermès' craftsmanship and aesthetics of the 1970s.
