Description from the seller
Japanese Satsuma bowl signed Eizan (栄山) – Meiji Era – Idealized Imperial Scene – Perfect Condition
Very beautiful Japanese Satsuma earthenware bowl, made in Japan at the end of the Meiji era (around 1885–1905), richly decorated and signed Eizan (栄山).
The inside of the bowl is adorned with an idealized imperial audience scene, inspired by the Japanese imperial court of the Heian period.
The composition features a high-ranking central figure, surrounded by two secondary figures in respectful poses, evoking a scene of formal presentation or an official audience.
Red stylized clouds, flowing golden lines, and a refined palette reinforce the scene's noble and symbolic character, without any direct official imperial representation.
The decoration is executed on a deep black background, enhanced with polychrome enamels and fine gilding applied by hand.
The ivory-colored paste with fine crazing, visible on the faces and the reverse, is characteristic of authentic Satsuma productions from the Meiji era.
The multi-lobed shape of the edge highlights the interior scene and bears witness to careful workshop craftsmanship.
Origin: Japan
Type: Satsuma faience
Period: Meiji Era (late 19th century)
Signature: Eizan (栄山), painted under the base.
Decoration: idealized imperial scene, polychrome enamels and gilding.
Dimensions :
Diameter: 10.5 cm
Height: 4.5 cm
Condition: Perfect condition, no chips, no restorations, gilding well preserved
The small, figurative Satsuma bowls with a black ground, signed and richly gilded, are less common than the cream-ground models and are sought after by collectors of Japanese ceramics from the Meiji era.
