Drafted in 1916, he painted hundreds of portraits of fallen soldiers at the front. He settled in 1923 in Mullem, where he mainly painted alleyways, churches, interiors and portraits. From 1932 he moved to a house in Deurle in the Leie region that he would paint with masterful skill. He also painted still lifes from time to time.
