Detailed description
Monumental work by Silvio Merlino, Neapolitan artist born in 1952, member of the Ambulanti group and protagonist of the Neapolitan Transavanguardia. The composition depicts three warships in imposing black silhouettes against a light background, with realistic details of smokestacks, armed turrets, plumes of smoke and overlapping silhouettes, framed by scorched edges and textural surfaces. This surreal contrast between military monumentalism and burned organic elements is characteristic of Merlino's experimental style, which combines oil painting, collage, and non-conventional materials to reinterpret contemporary landscapes and still lifes.
The work comes from the artist's solo exhibition at Nohra Haime Gallery, New York (March–April 1987), the artist's longtime gallery (with locations in NY and Palm Beach), as documented in the attached official catalog. The artist's canvases are housed in museums such as GNAM Napoli, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Museo del Novecento in Milan.
Provenance: Purchased directly at the exhibition at Nohra Haime Gallery, New York, March–April 1987 (original catalog attached). Milan private collection.
Authentication: Already documented in the official exhibition catalog; available for further archiving at Galleria Toselli (Milan, Merlino’s historic reference) or certified appraisal.
Note: Extremely rare subject matter in the naval category among Merlino's military productions (more commonly aircraft such as the F-15 and missiles). Exceptional format (180x290 cm), ideal for collectors and investors in Italian art from the 1980s. Perfect for institutional exhibitions.
