Antique wood frame gilded with gold leaf in a Louis XV revival style, from France, dating to circa 1850–1900, external dimensions 54.5 × 45.5 cm and internal 44 × 35 cm, in good condition with age‑related wear and marks.
Description from the seller
Gilded antique frame with gold leaf – Louis XV revival style with acanthus and shells – Late 19th / Early 20th century
Elegant antique carved wooden frame gilded with gold leaf (old gilding), of good artisanal quality.
The rich, symmetrical décor draws on the Louis XV style (rococo revival during the Napoléon III / Belle Époque period): an outer frieze of stylized acanthus leaves, shell motifs (scrolls and palmettes) at the corners and at the center of the sides, with a fine beaded inner molding and underscored fillets. This type of “neo-Louis XV” frame was very popular in France and Europe between 1880 and 1920, often produced in semi-artisanal batches to frame bourgeois portraits, paintings, or photographs.
The gold leaf gilding has a beautiful natural patina with warm tones and antique gold, some wear, small losses and rubbing from use (typical of age), with no major damage or visible restoration. The back is classic (cardboard or old paper), with the original hanging cord.
Very decorative, ideal for a painting, an engraving, an antique portrait, or even as a wall mirror. Timeless French classical style.
Period: Late 19th – early 20th century (circa 1880–1920)
Style: Louis XV revival / Napoleon III – Belle Époque
Condition: Good antique condition – original gilding with patina – normal wear and expected for its age.
