PRE-RAPHAELITIS PAINTER
(19th century)
"The Nereids"
oil on canvas 107 x 165.
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was an influential art association in Victorian painting (19th century), founded in September 1848. The term "Pre-Raphaelite" is a reference to art that existed before
Raffaello Sanzio, a painter considered guilty by the exponents of this movement of having "polluted art
exalting the idealization of nature and the sacrifice of reality in the name of "beauty", and allowed
developments of the "hated" academicism. In addition to setting itself the goal of abolishing the current models of art
Victorian art of the time and, more generally, the academic one, the Pre-Raphaelites aimed to revive the customs of an imaginary and nostalgic past, also attempting to unify the concepts of life, art, and beauty. The themes that most inspired the Pre-Raphaelites included biblical, literary (the authors who most inspired them were probably William Shakespeare and Dante Alighieri), fairy-tale, historical, and social themes. The Pre-Raphaelite movement exerted a strong influence in Italy, inspiring many artists to create works that, while retaining the characteristics of Pre-Raphaelite painting, anticipated the
Art Nouveau and Symbolist style, which would become popular at the end of the nineteenth century, the Nereids are part of the mythological/fairytale themes loved by these painters. They are minor goddesses of Greek mythology, sea nymphs, daughters of Nereus and the Oceanid Doris. They are always depicted as benevolent and charming young girls who reside among the waves like the Sirens. and about
fifty mentioned in mythological poems. The work we present depicts a sort of modern Nereids, who are iconographically different from the images we are used to. They have short haircuts, no flowers in their hair, and
no feminine affectation, except their nudity. It is easy to see Symbolist messages in this
scenographic painting which, thanks to its compositional structure, makes the observer feel involved in the scene.
