N He completed higher studies in Fine Arts in Tetouan, where he was born, in the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco, Spain, expanding them in Seville, Barcelona and Paris. In 1962 he moved to Girona where he actively participated in the city's cultural life. He settled in a masía in Casavells, in Baix Empordà, where he established his home-studio.
In 1961 he held his first solo exhibition at the Ceuta Cultural Center. Throughout his artistic career he has held nearly two hundred exhibitions in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. In 1982 he created a large-scale painting on commission from the town hall of Castillo de Aro, using letters of the alphabet as the pictorial motif and various objects (wood, neon, X-rays) on the canvas. He has painted other large-format murals (Sant Feliu de Guíxols, 1984; Buenos Aires, 1987-88 and Barcelona, 1992), and has also produced posters, prints, collages and illustrations for bibliophile books. He has exhibited frequently both within and outside Spain, and in 1992 a retrospective exhibition of his work took place in Girona. Since the 1980s he has lived in Casavells, where he has his studio and his foundation. In 2017 the Montserrat Museum organized an exhibition in honor of Josep Niebla.
He died at the age of 76 in Girona, the provincial capital.
