Description from the seller
Theodor Olsen / GAIA - Massive 137g Sterling Silver "Bark" Choker - Norwegian Modernism - c. 1980s
A monumental piece of Norwegian jewelry history.
Up for auction is an exceptionally rare and heavy sterling silver choker from the renowned "GAIA" collection, produced by the prestigious Theodor Olsen Sølvvareverksted (Bergen, Norway).
While standard necklaces from this era typically weigh between 20g and 40g, this museum-quality statement piece weighs a staggering 137.6 grams, making it a true investment-grade item.
The Design This piece is a prime example of Scandinavian Brutalist design, inspired by the raw nature of Norway. The surface features a deeply textured, organic relief reminiscent of lichen on granite rock or tree bark. The heavy, articulated links sit like a sculptural collar on the neck, catching the light beautifully due to the contrast between the raised polished silver and the oxidized recesses.
Theodor Olsen is one of Norway's oldest and most respected silversmiths (est. 1868). The GAIA line was their premier modernist collection, celebrated for its bold, naturalistic forms.
