Description from the seller
A rediscovered masterpiece: George Shalders (1826–1873) was an English landscape painter of the Victorian era, renowned for his ability to depict British and Irish rural scenes.
Coming from a family inheritance, this extraordinary oil painting on canvas is ready to find a new home. Bought by my father a long time ago, this work captures the gaze and enchants the spirit. It is a timeless work of art. Executed in the late 1800s, it expresses the spirit of an era and at the same time preserves a freshness and vitality that keep it relevant today. The unmistakable style, its honest dimensions—the canvas itself measures about 30x51 cm without the frame—and the artist's signature in the bottom left attest to its importance. The painter George Shalders, known for his landscapes and sheep, was originally from Portsmouth, England, where he was born, although he moved to London where he died and where he mainly worked, often depicting areas of Surrey and Hampshire.
The exact date of death is not indicated, but he was certainly born in 1826. He settled in London, painting landscapes, especially in Surrey and Hampshire, and traveling to Ireland. The style of George Shalders (1826-1873) is mainly landscape-oriented, characterized by evocative and detailed scenes, placing him within the context of 19th-century British art, often associated with the Napoleon III style (Second Empire) for some works, with a focus on rural and mountainous landscapes featuring shepherd figures and animals, executed in oil on canvas, with great attention to detail. At his death in 1873, a charity auction by Christie’s was organized to support his three orphaned children.
A unique piece; it is a versatile work that fits any environment, imparting a sophisticated and refined atmosphere. Its beauty makes it a focal point in any room, adding a touch of elegance and prestige. It is its details that make the difference. With a slim peripheral frame despite the overall size and its patina of age, it gives the painting a unique and authentic charm. The painting on the back of the canvas bears a number and a posthumous cartouche in addition to an old repair. A note regarding the listed date, which could be 1883 or 1888, is not in line with the presumed data, as previously stated, concerning the artist's death.
The painting is in good overall condition, with possible microscopic signs of age that underscore its authenticity and history. An investment for the future that means not only enriching one's art collection, but also making an investment for the future. Quality artworks, especially those by established artists, tend to appreciate over time.
The shipment will be sent via a well-known, tracked and insured courier, while the packaging will be done professionally.
The visible frame in the photo is included as a courtesy and is not an integral part of the artwork. Any damage to the frame will not be grounds for claims or order cancellations.
