Description from the seller
Photograph from my private collection signed by the great photographer Olaf Martens, a one-of-a-kind photograph, signed and stamped.
Olaf Martens is a German photographer who composes his images in an eccentric way, as if they were a theatrical production, often with surreal results. His photographs, built frequently on a basis of palpable humor, mix fashion, documentary, conceptual, social, even animal photography and references to historical and socio-political art. His work has created a distinctive personal imprint, easily recognizable and sought after by major brands, who continue to value the freshness and cynicism of his work.
In his images, there’s no doubt: there are all kinds of excesses, because he plays with the models, with characters he rescues from the street, including the catering waitresses, the fashion designer, or the cleaning ladies.
A student of the renowned Academy Graphik und Buchkunst, his or her graduation coincided exactly with the regime change, and as a result he or she developed his or her creative work under the strong influence of capitalism.
Sus early beginnings as a photographer took place a few years earlier, in her adolescence, when, with a small camera, she photographed the few covers of the LPs by Western artists that arrived from the other side of the wall. Martens photographed and resold the covers in an act of rebellion and subsistence.
The artist celebrated the regime change with publications in Western media, such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the magazines Stern and Geo. He also began developing theatrical fashion productions for major brands, which saw in the young photographer a breath of fresh air, an eclectic blend of theater, humor, and historical allegories. This activity gave him more time and money for his projects, but curtailed his creative freedom.
The advent of digital photography drew him into the fascination with new digital techniques, which led him to explore the new tools to find the best way to express his art.
Their work has been shown in numerous exhibitions: Kunst Museum in Bonn, Grassi Museum in Leipzig, Moscow House of Photography, Leopold Museum in Vienna, German Historical Museum in Berlin, Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, and it is also in the possession of a large number of private collectors, such as the FC Gundlach Collection and the Sammlung Goetz, Munich.
Olaf Martens is a contemporary photographer widely recognized for his theatrical, ironic, and provocative style. Although his career stands out more for international exhibitions and his work in fashion than for a long list of individual awards, he has the following recognitions and notable milestones:
* International Photo Awards (IPA): Their project "Dystopia – Spilt Milk", a series that explores the relationship between humans, artificial intelligence and machines, was awarded at this prestigious international competition.
* Recognition at PHotoEspaña: In 2011, their work was one of the main showcases by the EFTI Image Center for the PHotoEspaña festival, where their career was recognized as one of the most interesting photographers to have emerged from the former East Germany.
* Presence in Museums and Collections: More than conventional awards, Martens has received validation from the art world through the inclusion of his work in prestigious collections such as the FC Gundlach Collection and the Sammlung Goetz in Munich.
It is important to note that, often, he is associated in searches with awards of other contemporary photographers (such as Fernando Brito’s World Press Photo or Boris Eldagsen’s Sony World Photography Award), but his status is based on his training at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig and his exhibitions at centers such as the Leopold Museum in Vienna or the German Historical Museum in Berlin.
