Gien - Jewellery box - Earthenware

Beautiful antique bonbonnière from the Faïencerie de Gien (France), manufactured and hand-painted around 1890–1920.

The box is finished in a deep cobalt blue glaze and richly decorated with mythological winged creatures, floral scrolls, and a flower-shaped knob on the lid. The warm red-orange flower border along the side provides a pleasing contrast to the blue ground.

Marked on the underside with “GIEN – France – décoré à la main” and bearing the painter’s initials (MG), indicating that it is individually hand-painted.

The glaze shows a few glaze bubbles (oven bubbles) that formed during the baking process. This is a typical and authentic characteristic of antique cobalt blue.
In very good antique condition.
