Francesco De Rocchi was one of the leading figures of Chiarismo, a painting movement born in the 1930s in Lombardy. In this extraordinary 'Interior' the chiaristi features are immediately recognizable: the absence of dramatic chiaroscuro, the diffused and enveloping light, the use of subdued and refined tones. The female figure and the domestic space are built with a soft and fluid brushwork, without sharp contrasts, creating an intimate, silent, and surprisingly elegant atmosphere.

Francesco De Rocchi's painting career lies fully within the Lombard Chiarismo of 20th-century Italy, of which he was one of its most sensitive interpreters. In works such as this, color becomes the protagonist: the light harmonizes the forms and transforms the scene into a gathered and poetic vision, an authentic and highly accomplished example of the Chiarist poetical ethos.
