Francesco De Rocchi was one of the leading figures of Chiarismo, a painting movement born in the 1930s in Lombardy. In this extraordinary 'Interior' the chiaristi features are immediately recognizable: the absence of dramatic chiaroscuro, the diffused and enveloping light, the use of subdued and refined tones. The female figure and the domestic space are built with a soft and fluid brushwork, without sharp contrasts, creating an intimate, silent, and surprisingly elegant atmosphere.
Francesco De Rocchi's painting career lies fully within the Lombard Chiarismo of 20th-century Italy, of which he was one of its most sensitive interpreters. In works such as this, color becomes the protagonist: the light harmonizes the forms and transforms the scene into a gathered and poetic vision, an authentic and highly accomplished example of the Chiarist poetical ethos.
The artwork was created in 1973. The piece is signed on the front, while on the back there are the signature, title and date along with the label of the Maggiolini Art Gallery; on the frame there is the corresponding stamp.
The work is published and reproduced in the General Catalog raisonné of Francesco De Rocchi's paintings (Mascherpa–Modesti, Mondadori, 1987, p. 196, no. 670), an important element that reinforces the work's historical significance and its value to collectors.
Francesco De Rocchi (Milan, 1902–1978) was a central figure in 20th‑century Italian figurative painting and in Lombard Chiarismo. He exhibited in important national exhibitions, and his works, increasingly in demand, today represent a safe and prestigious purchase for the quality‑conscious collector.
