Rare ancient biblical volume uniting three books in one volume, printed in Paris,
at Guillaume Desprez, printer and the King's ordinary bookseller, in 1691
(same publisher, same place and same date for the three books).
* The work is adorned with three magnificent engraved headpieces (narrative typographic vignettes at the head of the book), illustrating:
the Maccabean martyrs, the presence of God with Israel, and Daniel in the lion's den.
* Provenance: ex-libris confirmed *
A specimen with remarkable provenance and perfectly identifiable.
Translation of manuscript ex-libris:
Ex libris of the Monastery of St. Stephen of Fontaneto, of the Order of Saint Benedict, Congregation of Saint Maurus.
with a note that it was listed in the catalog in 1753.
The volume thus comes from the library of the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Étienne at Fontenay, affiliated with the Congregation of Saint-Maur, famous for its scholarship, its critical works, and the quality of its libraries.
Later-printed ex-libris, inside front cover:
Mr. Ozanne, Doctor, at Pré-d’Auge (Normandy),
attesting to the transfer of the book into a private scholarly library after the dispersal of monastic property during the Revolution.
Provenance continues, historically coherent and preserved.
Contained volume:
The Book of Daniel,
The First Book of the Maccabees,
The Second Book of Maccabees,
translated into French and accompanied by explanations drawn from the Church Fathers and ecclesiastical authors.
These texts deal with:
for Daniel, great prophetic visions, exile, and messianic hope;
for the Maccabees, fidelity to the Law, resistance to oppression and martyrdom, major themes of the biblical and patristic tradition.
