VANTA – Remnant - XXL, an original hand-signed oil on canvas portrait (180 × 130 cm), created in the 2020s, shipped direct from the artist unframed and rolled.
Description from the seller
“Remnant” (2025)
Oil on canvas
180 x 130 cm
A male profile emerges from deep dark blue oil paint - face and upper torso becoming visible through strategic removal of pigment. VANTA has worked the uniform dark foundation using multiple approaches - scratching, wiping, etching, dissolving - to reveal the figure with surprising detail despite working within a single color. The form appears to rise from or recede into the blue field, caught in a state between presence and absence.
The technique creates subtle gradations where more paint has been removed to suggest lighter areas of the figure, while darker passages remain where less intervention occurred. Represented by S-Gallery and available on Catawiki, this piece demonstrates how much information can be conveyed through removal alone. Shadows, contours, and anatomical details all emerge from careful manipulation of paint density.
The substantial vertical format gives the emerging figure room to establish itself against the dark ground. The profile orientation adds to the sense of someone caught in transition - neither fully present nor completely disappeared, existing in that liminal space between solid form and atmospheric dissolution into the surrounding blue.
Shipping:
The work is delivered without a frame (professional packaging, rolled in a tube). it can easily be restretched by a professional or on your own, this is also cheaper then the otherwise increased cost of shipping when sending paintings of this size stretched
The measurements indicated are those of the painting stretched and mounted on a frame (The actual
measurements of the canvas are larger to allow it to be mounted on a frame 2-4cm thick.
