VANTA presents Shade, an original hand-signed oil painting in contemporary portrait style, measuring 170 × 140 cm, created in the 2020s in Austria and sold direct from the artist.
Description from the seller
“Shade” (2025)
Oil on canvas
170 x 140 cm
A female figure materializes from deep dark blue paint, revealed through careful removal and manipulation of the uniform foundation. The form remains quite dark - this isn’t about dramatic contrast but about subtle emergence, a figure that stays perpetually on the edge of visibility. VANTA has employed scratching, wiping, etching, and dissolving techniques to coax the anatomy from the blue field without ever fully releasing it into full light.
Represented by S-Gallery and available on Catawiki, the piece requires patient viewing. The figure doesn’t announce itself immediately but reveals gradually as the eye adjusts to the narrow tonal range. Details emerge through minimal shifts in paint density - just enough removal to suggest form without breaking the overall dark atmosphere that keeps the figure submerged in blue.
The canvas dimensions provide enough space for the full figure to develop while maintaining the sense of her being seen through obscuring darkness. She exists in that space between visible and invisible, always present but never quite stepping free from the deep blue that simultaneously conceals and defines her.
Shipping:
The work is delivered without a frame (professional packaging, rolled in a tube). it can easily be restretched by a professional or on your own, this is also cheaper then the otherwise increased cost of shipping when sending paintings of this size stretched
The measurements indicated are those of the painting stretched and mounted on a frame (The actual
measurements of the canvas are larger to allow it to be mounted on a frame 2-4cm thick.
