Hélène Planquelle is a self-taught contemporary figurative painter whose works explore the delicate balance between pleasure and suffering in our relationship with others, from both individual and collective perspectives, through recurring themes such as emotional dependency, attachment, vulnerability, acceptance and rejection, violence, and power dynamics.
Although figurative, his work is conceptual by nature, drawing from a rich soil of philosophical, literary, and scientific references, ranging from ethics to social sciences, including attachment theories and evolutionary psychology.
The title of each series, most often a quote (literary, poetic, or philosophical), creates a resonance between each work, thus opening up the field of possible interpretations for the viewer.
