Description from the seller

A very rare poster in very good condition. Zeppelin LZ 127 'Graf Zeppelin' over the stormy Atlantic by Theo Matejko (c. 1890–1946). Lithographed poster on paper, stone signed and dated 1928. This famous poster was created by the Austrian draftsman and illustrator, who was on board as a draftsman on behalf of the Ullstein publishing house during the Atlantic crossing.

As the story goes: in 1928, Matejko was commissioned by Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung to take part in the first American voyage of the airship LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin. He was to document the journey and life on board together with illustrator Ludwig Dettmann and a number of photographers and cameramen. The journey was not without drama. In the middle of the Atlantic, a violent storm destroyed one of the stabiliser wings' fabric tension, and near Bermuda, the airship encountered a severe storm. Matejko was there to sketch the accident and the subsequent repairs. As a press illustrator, he was used to documenting events when cameras were not available.

Size: 62.5 x 42.5 cm.
