Description from the seller

Very beautiful Roman North African terracotta jug, ceramic, complete
North Africa. 1st, 3rd century AD. African sigillata is defined as a type of pottery produced in several production areas and workshops of the Proconsular Africa and Mauritania [Césarienne] from Algeria to Libya, with a center in Tunisia; belonging to a common artisanal tradition that developed between the 1st and 7th centuries, of more or less fine quality, entirely or partially covered with a red-orange glaze, more or less smooth and shiny. Eastern sigillata production developed from the 1st century BC and, replacing Italian imports, became very abundant in the 2nd and 3rd centuries.
H: 22 cm Diameter: 12 cm
Condition: Good overall condition, slight chipping at the neck, see photos, and calcium deposits.
Provenance France, private collection acquired from a gallery/antique dealer. Previously part of an old French collection of Roman ceramics, private collection.
