Publius Terentius — Publii Terentii Comoediae — Latin edition published in Paris in 1642 by Typographia Regia, bound in full leather, 39 × 27 cm, 288 pages, with plates inserted, in good condition.
Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION: I present to you at auction a true bibliographic jewel from the 17th century, one of the most prized editions of the complete comedies of Publio Terencio Africano (Terentius), a fundamental figure of classical Latin theater and a reference author in European culture for more than a thousand years.
This work was printed in Paris in 1642 by the prestigious Typographia Regia, the French royal press, responsible for some of the most carefully produced and valued editions of modern Europe. We are confronted with a book conceived not only as a text, but as a high-level cultural object, originally intended for institutional libraries, universities, and scholars.
Publius Terentius Afer is one of the great playwrights of Antiquity, whose comedies directly influenced later authors such as Molière, Shakespeare, and the European theatrical tradition.
Their texts were for centuries compulsory study material in universities and colleges, which makes this edition a direct testament to the classical humanism of the seventeenth century.
Owning this work means preserving almost 400 years of European intellectual history.
A unique heraldic ex-libris: it belonged to Benedictus Goy, a Knight (Equitis) and lawyer (Advocati) at the courts of Paris and Lyon (In Curiis Paris. Et Lugdun.), which confers upon it exceptional historical and documentary value.
YEAR OF PUBLICATION: Paris (France) 1642
LANGUAGE: Latin (Original Version)
SIZE AND PAGE COUNT: Dimensions: 39 x 27 cm. Pagination: [1] + Engraved cover + 286 pp. COVETED COMPLETE WORK
CONDITION: Full leather binding, in good overall condition with some scuffs and losses, as shown in the photos. Spine with six raised bands decorated with beautiful gold motifs inspired by plant life and tejuelo. The interior is in good overall condition, as shown in the photos.
