AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

French wall sconce with two lights in solid brass – late 19th century

Elegant French two-light wall sconce, dating from the second half of the 19th century (circa 1870–1885).

The structure is made entirely of solid brass, including the arms, the bobeches, the decorative elements, and even the hardware, also in solid brass.
The only exception is the rear mounting plate, i.e., the part that contacts the wall, which is not brass; all visible and structural parts of the sconce are instead 100% solid brass, as clearly visible in the photographs.

The wall light presents a refined Louis XVI / neoclassical decoration, with sinuous arms, finely chased foliate elements and bobeches shaped like a floral goblet, of notable thickness and high craftsmanship.
The elongated backplate, adorned with a bow motif at the top, is typical of nineteenth-century French production intended for formal reception rooms.

The construction, solid and heavy, bears witness to pre-industrial artisanal workmanship, a hallmark of French manufactories at the end of the nineteenth century, prior to the serial production of the twentieth century.

The wall sconce retains a BAG bayonet-type French lamp holder – Baïonnette à Gorge, with the BAG mark incised directly on the brass, an original technical element attributable to the early French electrical installations in the transitional period from gas lighting to electricity.
The presence of this component confirms the object's French origin and strengthens its chronological placement.

The item has been carefully cleaned, in full respect of the metal's original patina, and has been completely rewired with a new installation. It is now operational and ready to use, with no structural alterations.

On the back there is a casting/assembly number, in keeping with the practices of French decorative ateliers of the period.

Measures
• Total height (from the top of the back plate to the bottom tip of the bow): 30 cm
• Width of the rear plate (body): 11 cm
• Total depth (arm projection): 15 cm
• Armrest height: 15 cm
• Total distance from arm to arm: 18.3 cm
• Dimensions of the flower (bobeche): approximately 6.3 cm in height x 6 cm in width

Conditions

Good overall condition, with signs of wear and patina consistent with age.
In the upper part of the body there is a small superficial imperfection of the brass, barely noticeable and overall inconspicuous. It is a minimal mark, compatible with the object's age and with authentic nineteenth-century production, and does not in any way compromise the overall aesthetics or the solidity of the structure.
