Ancient Greek Attic sessile kantharos, in terracotta, dating to c. 5th–4th century B.C., 10.2 cm high, in excellent condition, with provenance to the Lloyd and Jeanne Raport Collection and acquired at auction in 2020 in the United Kingdom, and supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Description from the seller
Finely decorated on both sides with a framed design in yellow and white slip, comprising an intricate geometrical pattern, a band of laurel branches with berries and bands of vertical lines. Two applied handles. Exquisite.
A sessile (meaning sitting) kantharos is an Athenian drinking cup characterized by a deep, cylindrical bowl and two vertical handles that do not extend above the rim. Unlike traditional, high-stemmed kantharoi, the sessile type features a low, moulded foot, providing enhanced stability.
